How to pass the Rhode Island knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Rhode Island manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Rhode Island law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Rhode Island written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 40 32 correct (8 mistakes allowed) 16 years
Motorcycle 40 32 correct (8 mistakes allowed) 16 years
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. The computerized knowledge exam is taken by reservation at DMV headquarters in Cranston, Monday through Friday, and is offered in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The DMV does not publish the number of items, the passing threshold or the waiting period after a failed attempt, so the figures shown here are an estimate.

Motorcycle. Rhode Island no longer issues motorcycle permits and does not administer its own motorcycle knowledge exam: the M endorsement is added after completing the motorcycle safety course run by the Community College of Rhode Island. The figures shown mirror the operator knowledge exam so that practice sessions can be scored.

CDL. A Rhode Island CDL may be issued at 18 for intrastate travel only, and 21 is required for interstate travel. Federal rule 49 CFR 383.135 sets the 80 percent passing score; the DMV does not publish the number of items on the general knowledge exam.
